CAPE TOWN (12 May 2014) – A golf club with less than 70 full members has outdone some of the biggest clubs in the country in raising money for this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge.
Clocolan Golf Club in the Free State has so far raised R18 000 for this nationwide charity series, which sees golfers sign up for club competitions around South Africa to help raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
About 800 club competitions are played from March through to July, followed by regional competitions to determine the 100 golfers who qualify for the finals at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course at Sun City from 20-21 October.
Apart from the green fees at the club competitions, golfers also make donations or bid on auction items to raise funds.
Since March, Clocolan Golf Club has outplayed every other club in South Africa with the amount it has raised.
The next best is Johannesburg’s Glendower Golf Club with R14 830 followed by Irene Country Club with R13 057 and then Parow Golf Club with R10 290.
Traditionally, the small Free State and Northern Cape golf clubs outperform the rest of their bigger and more famous counterparts.
Last year, Jacobsdal Golf Club raised an incredible R21 000 for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, while Hartswater Golf Club raised R16 000.
According to Clocolan Golf Club president, Morkel Venter, the strength of the smaller clubs lies in their greater sense of community.
“Our communities are very involved in such projects. This year what also helped us a lot was the fact that Mercedes-Benz was one of our big supporters. And obviously we have a few people in our community who have been affected by cancer, and who are really passionate about the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. It’s a great feeling to know that we can give something back in this way, and we’re grateful for that opportunity and really proud of our club,” said Venter.

About the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and CANSA
Sanlam and CANSA have partnered the Sanlam Cancer Challenge since 1993.
CANSA offers a unique integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer. As a leading roleplayer in cancer research (more than R6 million spent annually), the scientific findings and knowledge gained from the research is used to realign CANSA’s health programmes as well as strengthen its watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public. CANSA’s wide-reaching health programmes include prevention and education campaigns, CANSA Care Centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer. There is also patient care and support in the form of 11 CANSA Care Homes for out-of-town cancer patients in the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) as well as two CANSA-TLC Lodges for paediatric oncology parents in Pretoria and Limpopo.
