All Round Golfing Glory for World Club ProAm

The second PGA of SA | Mercedes Benz World Club ProAm, held in KwaZulu-Natal from 14 – 21 February, ended on a high note after receiving huge acclaim not only from the local and international PGA Professionals and their amateurs, but also from the PGA’s of Europe and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs as a premier golf tourism event for the province.

Guest speaker at the Awards Ceremony, Ian Randell, Chief Executive of PGA’s of Europe, said that he was impressed with the calibre of the tournament and that of the host golf courses. “This event will be sanctioned by the PGA’s of Europe and will feature on our international calendar as a premier tournament” added Randell.

The HOD at the Dept of Economic Development and Tourism, Mr Desmond Golding, said in his address that the World Club ProAm shared the Province’s vision for growth through golf tourism and that the tournament would continue to receive their full support.

“This is a huge achievement for our second year and we look forward to the enormous potential that awaits us as we continue to develop the World Club ProAm into the premier club championship on the PGA international golfing calendar”, said Craig Clay-Smith, tournament spokesperson.

32 teams of local and international PGA Professionals and their amateurs, battled it out over 5 days and 90 holes of fiercely competitive and exhilarating golf at Durban Country Club, Zimbali Country Club, Prince’s Grant Golf Estate, Cotswold Downs Golf Estate and Mt Edgecombe Country Club Course1.

The Professional Stableford saw the internationals go head-to-head in the top 5 spots as South Africa, Namibia, Australia and Swedish title defender, Henrik Engdahl from Crete Golf Club in Greece all had their eye on the title. In the final round it was Henrik Engdahl who charged up the field in an impressive finish on 40 points at Durban Country Club and held onto his title and trophy by finishing 9 strokes ahead of 2nd place winner, Steve Basson from Omeya Golf Club in Namibia.

“I played one of my best games in the final round and it was wonderful to win the second World Club ProAm on a personal career highlight. I will definitely be back next year to continue defending my title,” said Engdahl who walked away with a prize cheque of US$33 285.

The ProAm 4-Ball Team Alliance was dominated by the South Africans, with Modderfontein Golf Club leading the field from tee-off to the final putt and winning the team trophy on 440 points, 8 shots ahead of fellow South African rivals, Strand Golf Club1 on 432 points.

“A total prize purse of US$210 000, including cash for the professionals and cutting-edge TaylorMade golf apparel to the value of half-a-million rand was given away in prizes. We would like to thank our sponsors Mercedes Benz, Tsogo Sun, TaylorMade, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, Business Report, African Crystal and Aqua Mice for their valued support in making this tournament a huge success for the second consecutive year,” concluded Event Management Director, Beverley Theron of Flagship Events.

SA Golf Institute going from strength to strength

The Southern African Golf Institute is situated at River Club in Observatory, Cape Town. Their coaches are PGA qualified and personally trained by our Golf Director, internationally renowned coach Grant Hepburn. Grant has trained coaches around the world and is vastly experienced at passing on his knowledge in a way that allows coaches to have a thorough understanding of how to help golfers improve quickly and effectively.

I took some time out and paid them a visit today! What stood out for me is that everybody at the Institute are professional people and dedicated to your golfing needs. They provide private tuition as well as a host of other options from group coaching to full time coaching. They also offer you the opportunity to make golf your career through a PGA Diploma course and other options providing education alongside world class golf coaching.

PGA DIPLOMA

The three year PGA diploma offered by the SA Golf Institute in partnership with Cape Peninsula University of Technology, is recognised in over 40 countries across the world, and is specifically designed for individuals wanting to build a career in golf.

Coaching is provided by world-renowned Director of Golf, Grant Hepburn, and his team, on an individual and group basis, while the Cape Peninsula University of Technology provide education and lectures on subjects specific to the PGA Program, as well as various additional subjects that may be of interest to students. With world class coaches and experts in sports psychology, golf fitness and life skills, the SA Golf Institute prepares its students for a playing career in professional ranks.

During the course of study amateurs retain their amateur status ensuring that they can compete on provincial and national level before electing to turn professional. For those who don’t make it as a tour playing professional, the PGA subjects prepare and qualify students for a career in the golf industry, which may include green keeping, club management, events co-ordination, coaching, retail, golf tourism, course architecture, consulting, and tournament officiating. The PGA of SA is affiliated to the PGA’s of Europe and the PGA qualification is internationally recognised.

The SA Golf Institute will also be introducing a Golf Gap Year in 2013 - a one year golf certificate and golf program - including three subjects at Cape Peninsula, membership at The River Club Driving Range and the coaching program, designed to give players a chance to not only work on their game but to study some of the PGA subjects, and this certification counts as credit towards the PGA Diploma, should they wish to continue their studies.

Ernie Els is the SA Open player host for 2015

The Sunshine Tour has announced that Ernie Els will take on the role of host and ambassador for the South African Open Championship, starting with the 104th SA Open in January 2015 at Glendower. Ernie is a 5-time winner of the event, most recently in December 2010.

Ernie Els is the SA Open player host

In addition to the SA Golf Development Board’s Chapter in Ekuhurleni, Ernie’s two charities, Els for Autism and the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation will become the beneficiary charities of the tournament. Selwyn Nathan, executive director of the Sunshine Tour said, “We are very excited that Ernie has accepted the role, which we are sure will go a long way to re-establishing golf’s second-oldest national championship as one of the world’s flagship events. Ernie’s commitment to the Sunshine Tour has been unwavering throughout his stellar career and we are very grateful that he has reaffirmed this commitment to professional golf in South Africa by helping us to grow our national Open.”

From his US base in Florida, Ernie said, “I am very honoured to have been offered this role and accepted without hesitation as the South African Open Championship is a tournament with incredible history and has featured strongly throughout my career. I look forward to working together with the Sunshine Tour to achieve our shared vision of growing the SA Open, so that it can once again take its rightful place among the most prestigious tournaments in world golf. Whatever successes South African golfers have enjoyed around the world, none of us forgets the incredible start we had in our careers by having tournaments like the SA Open to play in on the Sunshine Tour. It is therefore imperative that we do our best to ensure that South Africa’s flagship events are sustainable for generations to come and I am delighted to be able to give my full support to achieving this. I have no doubt that my fellow countrymen who play on the European and PGA Tours feel the same way and I look forward to them joining me in working towards these goals.”

Cllr Mondli Gungubele, Mayor of Ekurhuleni, where Ernie spent his formative years as a young golfing phenom, added, “As the host sponsor of the 104th South African Open Championship, we are delighted that one of Ekurhuleni’s most famous sons has agreed to take on this role and we look forward to welcoming him back once again to the City of Ekurhuleni.”
